Rick B. Duque: The Collaboration Paradox Revisited // Mapping Developing World Science in the Internet Age
Veranstaltung im Rahmen der Vortragsreihe Internetforschung.
Ort: Museumsquartier, Raum DA half decade ago my colleagues and I reported a ‚collaboration paradox‘ with regards to the adoption, use, and impact of Internet technologies in the research process of Kenyan, Ghanaian and Keralan (India) scientists.
Our ongoing multi-method study (quantitative communication survey, qualitative interviews, and video-ethnography) examines the ways in which the research process differs among scientific communities located in developing regions by focusing on three questions:
- Is collaboration associated with productivity in these regions?;
- Is access and use of the Internet associated with reduced problems in collaboration in these regions?; and
- what is the Internet‘s impact on the geographical distribution of professional contacts and publications in these regions?
Since the earlier investigation was published, we have added three nations (South Africa, the Philippines, and Chile), while repeating the communication survey in the original three. We launch a third wave of the study this summer 2010.
Rick B. Duque is a professor in the Institut für Wissenschaftsforschung at Universität Wien. His recent publications include
