The relevance of Enterprise Ontology for e-Commerce
Die E-Commerce Group des Institute of Software Technology and Interactive Systems der präsentiert: Public Lectures in Business Informatics – Trends in e-Commerce WS 2010/2011
Jan Dietz – Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands
Abstract:
Since e-Commerce basically is doing commerce while making intensely use of modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT), it is important to understand the essence of doing commerce (or business in an broad sense), i.e. understanding commerce independent of the way it is implemented, so e.g. independent of the use of ICT-applications.
Enterprise Ontology provides such knowledge. It is defined as the understanding of the construction and the operation of an enterprise (or a network of enterprises), completely independent of the way in which it is implemented. Therefore, the ontological model of an enterprise is the ideal starting point for the design and engineering of the supporting ICT-applications.
In this lecture, the notion of Enterprise Ontology will be explained, as well as its possible application in the domain of e-Commerce. Two applications will be elaborated in particular. The first one regards b2b commerce; it is about the ontological modeling of a supply chain. The second one regards the design of the user-application dialog, e.g. for internet shops.
