Im Rahmen der Zusammenarbeitsförderung durch das Alfred-Ebenbauer-Stipendium der Universität Wien hält die israelische Medien- und Kommunikationswissenschafterin Dr. Carmel Vaisman im Juni zwei Vorträge an der Universität Wien. Eingebettet ist die Zusammenarbeit in das FWF-geförderte Forschungsprojekt “Texture Matters” (Leitung am Institut für Theater-, Film- und Medienwissenschaft: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Klemens Gruber), das Anfang Mai startete.

Am 21. Juni spricht Carmel Vaisman am TFM über “Free Hugs, Flash Mobs and Smart Mobbing. Utilizing Meme Power for Social Action“:

Memes are cultural units (symbols, practices, styles etc.) which are spread by imitation, formed and performed in diverse incarnations. Memes are the fabric of the Web and at the core of the online participatory culture. In recent years, mimetic phenomenona have gone beyond being fun content, to becoming a key mechanism of social activism, establishing a universal syntax of global conversation and community, by bringing performance and humor into everyday life as well as social and political action. This talk will focus on the role of a particular genre of YouTube video memes referred to as Flashmobs, in mobilizing online audiences to offline performative action.

Dr. Carmel L. Vaisman is a research fellow in the Department of Communications at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She has been researching Web Culture and Discourse under the mentorship of the late Professor Brenda Danet ever since her B.A studies in 1995. She wrote her doctoral ethnographic research on the Hebrew-language blogosphere, and recently published her first book titled Hebrew On-Line. Her previous work included technology-related journalism and Internet industry consultancy. She is one of the pioneer Internet users in Israel and an active member of the online Israeli community. Her voluntary work includes consulting state and civil society organizations on policy issues involving social media challenges, and the representation of the Israeli voice on initiates like Global Voices and the Anna Lindh EuroMed intercultural dialogue forum.
