Im Rahmen der Zusammenarbeitsförderung durch das Alfred-Ebenbauer-Stipendium der Universität Wien hält die israelische Medien- und Kommunikationswissenschafterin Dr. Carmel Vaisman im Juni zwei Vorträge an der Universität Wien.

Am Mittwoch, den 22. Juni spricht Carmel Vaisman am Institut für Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie über “Don’t Feed The Trolls. Countering The Discourse Patterns of Online Harassments”:

The Internet‘s anonymous and mediated mode of communication has resulted in increased phenomena of spamming, flaming, trolling, hate speech, various forms of cyber bullying and even claims of virtual rape. This talk will outline and analyze the discourse patterns defined by online users as harassing, offering some resol…utions and fresh perspectives informed by cultural and philosophical aspects of communication.

The talk will offer case studies from the Israeli Web that contextualize flaming and hate speech within Jewish Talmudic rhetoric as a discourse strategy of achieving solidarity and consent.

Dr. Carmel L. Vaisman is a research fellow in the Department of Communications at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She has been researching Web Culture and Discourse under the mentorship of the late Professor Brenda Danet ever since her B.A studies in 1995. She wrote her doctoral ethnographic research on the Hebrew-language blogosphere, and recently published her first book titled Hebrew On-Line. Her previous work included technology-related journalism and Internet industry consultancy. She is one of the pioneer Internet users in Israel and an active member of the online Israeli community. Her voluntary work includes consulting state and civil society organizations on policy issues involving social media challenges, and the representation of the Israeli voice on initiates like Global Voices and the Anna Lindh EuroMed intercultural dialogue forum.

Dr. Vaismans Besuch wird unterstützt durch das Alfred-Ebenbauer- Stipendium der Universität Wien, im Rahmen des FWF-geförderten Forschungsprojekts Texture Matters am Institut für Theater-, Film- und Medienwissenschaft.
