David Eaves, open data enthusiast in Canada, suggested doing an Global Open Data Hackday on December 4th. This was quickly picked up by others, and now energy is building to do a day of work on re-using Open Data around the world. Thus far 39 cities on 4 continents have registered interest. There’s an event in Austria too!
Open Data Hackathon?
It’s a gathering of developers, designers, statisticans, libarians, officials and citizens to write applications using public aviable data. There are a growing number of places that now have open data. We need to keep innovating with that – to show governments and the public why it’s serious, why it’s fun, why it makes life better, and above all, why it’s important.
Who should participate?
Citizens – We need you the most. If it weren’t for you, this whole thing wouldn’t be happening. We need ideas, cheerleaders, and friends to spread the word.
Developers – We need computer cowboys (and cowgirls) like yourself to wrangle data into something useful. That means visualization, notification, integration, etc., all in the name of doing something crazy and fantastic.
Statisticians – YES! YOU ARE SO NEEDED. Seriously. While we can find it, blow it up, calculate it, and make it look pretty, we needs us some mean number crunchin’ to present meaningful visualizations. Join up.
Librarians – I heard you folks like books and eat catalogs of data for breakfast. You beautiful people are going to scour the earth for interesting data, help the rest of us figure out what’s important, and generally be useful.
Designers – If you help out to make something snazzy, I will award you with a copy of Photoshop that will never crash.* We need people like you to make the rest of our work look amazing, feel intuitive, and have a smooth user experience. You know the drill.
How is this going to work?
Saturday, December 4th, you show up at Raum D / quartier21 at Museumsquartier, start at 11:00
- You get to work on an app.
- At 5:00pm, you show & tell.
- The media reports on your app.
- The public find out about your beautiful work, you gain tons of users, and everyone wins.
If you have an idea for an app, or you want to contribute to a project, or you simply want to see what’s being made, then you should definitely check the Hackfest out. No matter your skillset or interests, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to learn and help the Vienna and Austrian Open Government Data Community grow.
So register now!
There are no costs for you, just your valuable time. Register yourself on the international Hackathon Wiki, following this link. And spread the word!
What to bring?
Gadgets! Bring your laptops, mobile phones, etc. We’re trying to make this event very hands on, so feel free to bring all your wacky geektronics so that you can participate in all the fun. Don’t worry if you don’t bring anything since there will still be tons of stuff to do.
